Quinte Business Development Centre Partners: Quinte Economic Development Commission; Trenval Business Development Corporation and Loyalist Training and Development Centre hosted the breakfast meeting of senior leaders from local manufacturing plants including: owners, vice presidents, plants managers and other senior managers from manufacturers in the Bay of Quinte Region.
Pascal Dennis is a professional engineer, author and advisor to North American firms making the lean leap. Pascal developed his skills on the Toyota shop floor in North America and Japan, and at leading international companies. He is a faculty member of the Lean Enterprise Institute where he also serves as editorial director.
Pascal has been a manager of operations, human resources, quality, finance and health, safety & environment. He has supported lean implementation at companies across North America. In leadership positions at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Pascal supported several major model launches, the construction of a new 3 million square foot facility, and the hiring of 200 team members.
Pascal is the co-author with John Shook of Lean Production Simplified: A Plain-Language to the World’s Most Powerful Production System. Author of Andy & Me - A Lean Journey
About the Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) The LEI is a non-profit training, publishing, and research organization founded by James Womack, PhD, in August 1997. It has developed simple but powerful tools for implementing a set of ideas known as lean production and lean thinking, based initially on the Toyota Production System and now extended to an entire Lean Business System.
Pascal Dennis challenged provided a brief history of production process leading to the development of Lean Manufacturing based on the Toyota Production System. In many cases with manufacturers the price of goods that they produce is fixed in many cases the only way to improve profitability is to reduce cost through the elimination of all waste through the production system.
Pascal also discussed the threat to Canadian manufacturers by China and other countries and noted that the rise or fall of Canadian manufacturing will occur one firm at a time. Pascal stressed that as Canadians we have the “right stuff” to survive and grow by implementing lean production processes. Lean excellence requires: Humility, Openness, Team work, and good fundamentals, which in general, as Canadians, we have. Pascal further went in to details of discussing the implementation of Lean within a production plant.

The Need for Networking
In recent municipal business retention and expansion surveys of manufacturers the need and desire by manufacturers to have a local manufacturing network was confirmed. The former Quinte and District Manufacturing Association provided the networking function for industry however it’s structure did not reflect the needs of today’s manufacturing leader.
Quinte Business Development Centre partners agreed to provide the administration function for a new local industry association. Survey of industry leaders at the breakfast showed the desire to attend future events that provided networking and guests speakers on topics of interest. A steering committee of industry representatives will be formed to provide direction for this new group call the Quinte Manufacturing Council.. Steering Committee members are Brett Buatti, General Mills, Glen LeClair, Procter and Gamble, Bob Reid Invar Manufacturing, three more. The steering committee will be giving direction to the Quinte Business Development Centre on next steps to proceed. speakers.
